Travelers under the VWP can stay in the U.S. for up to 90 days per visit, making it a convenient option for short-term trips. However, VWP travelers must obtain authorization through the Elec-tronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) before boarding a U.S.-bound flight or vessel. ESTA is an automated system that determines eligibility for visa-free travel under the VWP and assesses security risks. Travelers must complete the ESTA application online, provide personal and travel information, and pay a processing fee. Approval is typically granted within minutes but should be obtained at least 72 hours before departure to avoid delays.

Once approved, ESTA authorization is valid for multiple entries over a two-year period or until the traveler's passport expires, whichever comes first. While VWP travelers can visit the U.S. for business or tourism, they are not permitted to work, study, or extend their stay beyond the 90-day limit. Upon arrival, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers at the port of entry will determine whether to grant admission based on the traveler's eligibility and purpose of visit. It is essential for travelers to carry proof of onward travel, such as a return ticket, and sufficient funds to support their stay in the U.S.

Travelers who overstay their permitted 90-day period under the VWP may be barred from future visa-free travel and could face difficulties obtaining a U.S. visa in the future. Unlike visa holders, VWP participants cannot change or extend their status while in the U.S. If an extended stay or a different purpose of travel is needed, applying for an appropriate U.S. visa is necessary. Given the restrictions and eligibility requirements of the Visa Waiver Program, travelers should carefully review their qualifications and seek legal advice if they are unsure whether the VWP is the best option for their visit to the U.S.
