The C-1/D visa is a nonimmigrant visa designed for foreign crew members working aboard in-ternational airlines or sea vessels who need to transit through the United States. This combined visa allows eligible individuals to enter the U.S. temporarily for travel related to their work, such as boarding their vessel or switching assignments. Crew members, including pilots, flight attend-ants, ship officers, and cruise staff, must obtain this visa before traveling to ensure compliance with U.S. immigration laws. Unlike other visas, the C-1/D does not permit extended stays or em-ployment outside of the designated crew duties.
To apply, applicants must complete Form DS-160, the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application, and pay the required visa fee. They must then schedule an interview at their nearest U.S. embassy or consulate, where they will provide a valid passport, proof of employment from a recognized airline or maritime company, a letter from their employer detailing their job duties, and their travel itinerary. The consular officer will assess their eligibility based on their employment status and intent to depart the U.S. upon completing their transit or assignment.
If approved, the C-1/D visa is typically issued as a multiple-entry visa with a validity period based on the applicant’s nationality and employer agreements, allowing transit through the U.S. for crew-related purposes. However, stays are usually limited to a maximum of 29 days per entry, with no extensions or status changes permitted. Crew members must comply with all visa conditions, including departing the U.S. within the authorized time frame, to avoid complications with future entries.
