C-1: Transit through the U.S. to another Country

The C-1 visa is a nonimmigrant visa that allows foreign travelers to pass through the United States en route to another country. This visa is ideal for individuals who need to make a short stop in the U.S. before continuing their journey. Unlike tourist or business visas, the C-1 visa does not permit extended stays or activities beyond immediate and continuous transit. To qualify, applicants must demonstrate that they have a confirmed itinerary, valid documentation for their final destination, and sufficient funds for their travel.

The application process begins with completing Form DS-160, the Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application. After submitting the form and paying the required visa fee, applicants must sched-ule a visa interview at their nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. During the interview, they must provide a valid passport, proof of onward travel, and supporting documents, such as visas or en-try permits for their final destination. The consular officer will assess whether the applicant meets eligibility requirements and intends to comply with the transit purpose of the visa.

If approved, the C-1 visa is typically granted for a short validity period, usually allowing a stay of up to 29 days while in transit. Travelers must follow all visa conditions, ensuring that they do not engage in unauthorized activities, such as employment or overstaying their permitted dura-tion. Those needing multiple transits through the U.S. should verify if they require a multiple-entry visa.
